Overview

Who Pays What is a bill-splitting app for iPhone. It is built with a “Privacy by Design” philosophy: the developer does not collect, receive, store, sell, or share any personal information.

Information We Collect

None. Who Pays What has no server, and it does not include any analytics, advertising, crash reporting, or tracking SDKs. On the App Store, the app is labeled “Data Not Collected.”

Data Stored on Your Device

The following data is stored only on your device and is never sent to the developer:

  • Past splits (items, prices, tax, tip, and the names you enter for each person), up to 200 splits
  • Your name
  • Your default tip percentage
  • Your Venmo username, if you enter one

You can delete a single split by long-pressing it in your history, or delete all of them with Settings › Clear history. Your name, default tip, and Venmo username can be changed or cleared in Settings. Deleting the app removes all of this data.

If you use iCloud Backup or back up your iPhone to a computer, this data may be included in those backups, which are governed by Apple’s policies.

Camera

The camera is used only while you scan a receipt. Text is read on your device using Apple’s Vision framework. Receipt photos are never uploaded and are not saved to your history.

Photos

When you choose a receipt photo, the app uses the system photo picker, so only the single photo you select is passed to the app.

When you save a summary image, the app asks only for permission to add photos. This permission does not allow the app to read your photo library.

Sharing

When you share a result, it goes only to the destination you choose in the iOS share sheet. If you are a Pro user and have entered your Venmo username, the shared text includes a Venmo payment link containing your username, the amount, and a note. When a friend taps that link, Venmo opens, and from then on Venmo’s own policies apply. The app itself never communicates with Venmo.

Purchases

Pro is an in-app purchase through the Apple App Store. Payment is handled by Apple, and the developer does not receive your name, email address, or payment information. The app only checks whether Pro has been purchased.

Children’s Privacy

Who Pays What is suitable for all ages (4+). Because it does not collect information from anyone, this applies equally to users of all ages, including children.
